This month I wanted to share some healthy foods that are not only unique and made in the United States, but are also healthy. I promise you, all of them taste great. If you don’t agree with my suggestions, or have some great foods and snacks of your own, please email me by indicating Health Bytes in the subject line and emailing
Not only is corn being used to manufacture fuel, but it has popped up in some new and great foods. Glad Corn is located in Mountain Lake, MN. Owned by farmers Stan and Gladys Friesen, they had been working their 500 acres with soy and corn for over 30 years. Stan was working on an ethanol fuel recipe (yes I did say fuel), when a batch heated up on the stove and corn exploded. Glad Corn was the result. It is a great tasting food and available in Original plus four other favors. You should be able to find it locally at Bank Street Natural Foods, New Milford and Edge of the Woods Market, New Haven or order directly from the web. My family purchased their frst bag of Glad Corn at Cabelo’s this fall and we were hooked.
Forget the alternative pasta. Ever tried corn pasta? In my opinion this is the best tasting pasta compared to white four pasta. Being someone who is intolerant of wheat in food, I went looking for a new alternative. Obviously wheat was out. I just loved pasta, but didn’t love the alternatives. Then I discovered Mrs. Leeper’s in the organic section at Shaw’s Supermarket and have been a happy pasta eater ever since.
Mrs. Leeper’s is wheat-free, gluten-free, casein-free and comes in elbows and spaghetti. It does stick a bit more than regular pasta (my opinion), but a little oil and salt plus stirring can get rid of this easily. Order from Amazon.com and other websites listed at mrsleepers.com.
If you haven’t found these beauties in your local specialty shop or organic market, then you haven’t really tasted a real cracker. Available in the organic section of local markets, meet Doctor Kracker. This all natural organic cracker and fatbread company say they are the “home of the uber crunch”, and I have to agree.
The original recipe came from Klaus Karg and Carsten Kruse. Mr. Karg’ s grandfather was a doctor and owned a bakery in Schwabach, Germany. In 2003 Mr. George Eckrich and his German partners started Dr. Kracker in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Kracker produces a line of wholesome, organic fatbreads and of course, crackers.
My personal favorite is Seedlander Snacker Krackers made with spelt four (also available in a Veggie Spelt). Every bite is flled with real seeds and there’s nothing missing in the taste.
Dr. Kracker is available at Wild Oats, Whole Foods and Shaw’s Supermarket (in the organic section). You can also purchase these beauties directly from Amazon.com or Greenshopper.com
Great for the younger set and parents who don’t wish to flll their children’s lunch with different forms of sugar and water, try something organic that the kids will love. Although the price of organic milk is higher, the rewards of having no antibiotics, no growth hormones and no pesticides within the product make it all worth the cost.
I stumbled across this beauty at Costco. It allows me to pack a beverage for my son that is nutritious and good for him. The single serve milk packs are perfect for times when smaller on-the-go packs are needed.
Horizon Organic started back in the early ‘90’s when there were very few organic dairy products. In Wisconsin, Mark Retzloff and Paul Repetto found a small cooperative of small organic dairy farmers and Horizon Organic became a reality.
First producing organic yogurt, the demand for organic milk products grew beyond expectations. Today Horizon Organic is the nation’s leading brand of certified organic milk, with a full line of USDA certified organic dairy products which is available at most large and health markets.
