A Wintry Mix Print E-mail

As the sleet, and snow, and rain continue to keep fans in a deep freeze, the sports stories keep getting hotter.

Even in the cold winter months, baseball steals the headlines. The long awaited, much anticipated steroid report finally came out, and surprise, surprise, the Yankees got hit hard. Favorite son, and good Christian man, Andy Pettitte was juicing. Not so shocking was that his good ‘ol Texas buddy Roger ‘the Rocket’ Clemens was taking injections in the buttocks too. It appears that ‘the Rocket’ needed some extra fuel to keep him from fading away into ‘the twilight of his career.’ Former Red Sox general manager Dan Duquette was redeemed. It was Duquette who launched the rocket to Toronto after Clemens went 38-39 in his last four seasons in Boston.

Clemens, Pettitte, and others are set to testify under oath in front of congress as to whether or not Senator George Mitchell’s steroid report is accurate. Thus far, Clemens has used the Rafael Palmeiro excuse, stating that he thought he was being injected by vitamin-b 12. Pettitte on the other hand, has already admitted to cheating, thusly shooting down ‘the Rocket’s’ claim that trainer Brian McNamee is lying.

The New York football Giants have been a road show tour de’ force. The G-Men have set an NFL record by winning ten consecutive road games en route to going to the Super Bowl. After losing their first road game of the year, New York has been unbeatable away from the swamplands. ...has used the Rafael

Perhaps New York fans should have been less critical of head coach Tom Coughlin, and quarterback Eli Manning. Calling for both their heads during the season, the team responded by playing poorly at home. Now that they have gone on the road and improbably beaten three straight divisions champs, the hypocritical New York fans are firmly behind their Mann-ing.

The G-Men and their fans are anxiously awaiting a rematch with the undefeated New England Patriots. The Patriots are looking to complete their historical season, and win their fourth title in seven years. The Giants have already turned the tables on the Cowboys, and Packers – teams that beat them in the regular season. The Patriots did the same, winning in the memorable sixteenth game of the year. The G-Men now get one more chance to end the perfection. Speaking of the Cowboys, there is not a sports fan alive who didn’t enjoy seeing boy toy Tony Romo come up lame, and T.O. crying like a little cowgirl after the defeat.

Sports fans were mesmerized by the winter wonderland in Green Bay during the divisional round, as the Packers defeated the Seahawks in a snowstorm. Fans were then frozen in their seats watching the championship round, as the Giants improbably beat Brett Favre in overtime on the frozen tundra of Lambeau field.

College football fans were bored to tears by the lame-brained computer driven championship, brought to you by the bogus B.C.S. The schedule, the match- ups, the blowouts; there is not a sports fan alive who could be satisfied with that system.

The UConn football program took a major step forward this season, even though they stumbled mightily in their last two games. The Huskies got blown out by West Virginia when they were playing for a Big East title and BCS berth. They followed that up with a very disappointing appearance in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, losing to Wake Forest. The coaching in that game was abysmal, as the offense made no adjustments whatsoever, and the defense was exposed in the second half after having a brilliant first half. Also, there were questionable decisions made on two fourth downs that led to the bitter loss. Even still, UConn fans can be pleased with a Big East co-championship, and a high ranking of thirteen during the season.

The UConn basketball program is still trying to break through into the big time. The ‘young pups’ finally broke their seven game losing streak against ranked opponents by blowing out Marquette. This could be the turning point for this team that has suffered more close calls against top teams early this season. Tough losses to Memphis, Gonzaga, Notre Dame, and Georgetown led to fans wondering if this team was ever going to prove that they knew how to win a big game. Look for the Huskies to get a huge win in Indiana if they want to gain some real confidence.

The Boston Celtics big-three party is off to an NBA best record start of 33-6. The big trades that brought Kevin ‘the big ticket’ Garnett, and Ray ‘ He Got Game’ Allen to Boston have led to the C’s being major contenders for an NBA crown. The most surprising aspect of the team’s play has been their league-leading defense. Look for Boston to add a veteran point guard to the mix to solidify their chances.

With the success of the Celtics, Boston fans are enjoying a run where three of there major teams; The Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics are 58-6 since the Red Sox were down 3-1 to the Indians in the A.L.C.S. Now if the Boston Bruins could join the party, things would really be out of control in Beantown.

The New York Bricks won three games in a row recently, which was a major shock. Still, they are a laughing stock of a franchise, led by the most disliked man in New York, Isiah ‘Zeke’ Thomas. The most fun Brick fans have had this year was picketing outside the Garden with pink slips for Isiah’s firing.

Well, by the time you read this, there will be more snow, and ice, and rain, and the two weeks of hype leading up to the Super Bowl will be over. History will have been made, with the G-Men pulling the major upset, or the Patriots putting the icing on their crowning achievement. Pass the chips…
