Fantasy Hoops Dream Husky Alum-ania
A 13 game win streak to start the season by the UConn men’s basketball team was abruptly ended on opening night of Big East Conference play. The Huskies suffered a disappointing loss at home to the Georgetown Hoyas. Questions immediately arose about this talented yet unproven team yet those questions have been answered.
Coach Calhoun’s squad responded to that loss by reeling off seven straight wins. The win streak included three-straight on the road and culminated with a recent road win in Notre Dame. That impressive win ended the Fighting Irish’s 45 game home-winning streak, which was the longest in the nation.
The Big Dogs from Storrs slipped to number three after the
Georgetown loss, but are now back at number two. The only team standing
in their way from being number one is the hated Duke Blue Devils. The
Huskies may stake their claim at being the top team in the nation
during the regular season, but what really matters is they are staking
their claim at being a number one seed in the Big Dance when the season
really matters.
Key Upcoming Men’s Games:
Feb. 2nd @ Louisville
Feb. 7th vs. Michigan
Feb. 11th vs. Syracuse
Feb. 16th vs. Pittsburgh
Feb. 28th vs. Notre Dame
The
woman’s basketball team has been number one all season, and has yet to
lose a game. They are 19-0, and looking like a team that can run the
table.
The Lady Huskies are coming off their most impressive win in
recent history. Despite playing without Caroline Doty, who suffered a
season ending knee injury for the second consecutive season, UConn
thoroughly dominated the number two team in the land, North Carolina,
in Chapel Hill, N.C. The 88-58 beat down was the first one versus two
match up the Huskies had played since 2003. They improved their overall
record in top team games to 8-2 all-time.
UConn will have to overcome the loss of Doty, a top player on the team. The loss of Doty eventually caught up to Geno Auriemma’s squad in the Big Dance last year. The coach will be hoping the same fate doesn’t await his team as they pursue their sixth national title and first since 2004.
